Entertaining shouldn’t mean spending the whole evening in the kitchen. These tiramisu cups are the dessert I make when friends come over — elegant enough to impress, easy enough to assemble in twenty minutes flat.

Tiramisu is the dessert that launched a thousand dinner parties, and for good reason. Layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers, a cloud of mascarpone cream, and a snowfall of cocoa — it’s indulgent, it’s Italian, it’s basically perfect. But the classic version comes with baggage: raw eggs to temper, a springform pan to wrestle with, and slices that collapse the moment you serve them.

Enter tiramisu cups. Everything you love about tiramisu, layered into individual glasses — no baking, no slicing, no stress. Each guest gets their own perfect portion, which means they look gorgeous with zero plating effort. And because they need to chill, they’re a true make-ahead dessert: assemble them in the morning (or the night before), and your dinner-party dessert is done before you’ve even thought about the main course.

The Dinner-Party Dessert Playbook

Here’s why this format beats the traditional pan every time for entertaining:

  • No cutting, no collapsing — each cup is already a perfect serving.
  • Make-ahead friendly — they need 4 hours of chilling, so last-minute prep is literally impossible (in the best way).
  • Portion control — rich enough that a small glass is exactly right.
  • Endlessly giftable — set a chilled cup in front of someone and watch their face.

Ingredients

Makes 6 generous cups.

  • 16 oz (450 g) mascarpone cheese, room temperature — the soul of tiramisu; don’t substitute cream cheese, the flavor isn’t the same.
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, cold — whipped to soft peaks for that cloud-like texture.
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar — dissolves smoothly into the cream.
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups strong espresso or strong coffee, cooled — brew it strong; this is where the flavor lives.
  • 3 tbsp coffee liqueur (Kahlúa or similar), optional — adds depth; skip it for an alcohol-free version.
  • 24–30 ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi) — the crisp Italian kind, not the soft cake-like ones.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting — dust just before serving for the prettiest finish.
  • Chocolate shavings or coffee beans, to garnish (optional)

The short, simple ingredient lineup behind these no-bake tiramisu cups.

Equipment

  • 6 small glasses, jars, or ramekins (about 6–8 oz each)
  • Stand mixer or electric hand mixer
  • Two mixing bowls
  • Shallow dish for the espresso dip
  • Fine-mesh sieve for dusting cocoa

Instructions

Step 1 — Make the mascarpone cream

In a large bowl, beat the mascarpone, powdered sugar, and vanilla with a mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Don’t overbeat — mascarpone can turn grainy if you’re aggressive.

Step 2 — Whip the cream

In a separate bowl, whip the cold heavy cream to soft peaks — when you lift the beaters, the peaks should gently flop over. Soft, not stiff.

Step 3 — Fold it together

Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture in two additions, using a spatula and a light hand. You’re building a cloud here — keep the air in.

Step 4 — Prepare the espresso dip

Pour the cooled espresso into a shallow dish and stir in the coffee liqueur if using.

Step 5 — Layer the cups

Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the espresso — one second per side, no soaking — and arrange a layer in the bottom of each glass (break them to fit). Spoon or pipe a layer of mascarpone cream over the top. Repeat with a second layer of dipped ladyfingers and cream, ending with cream.

Step 6 — Chill

Cover the cups with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight. The ladyfingers soften into cake-like layers and the flavors meld.

Step 7 — Serve

Just before serving, dust generously with cocoa powder through a fine-mesh sieve and add chocolate shavings or a coffee bean if you like.

Pro Tips

  • Room-temp mascarpone is non-negotiable. Cold mascarpone turns lumpy; let it sit out 30 minutes before you start.
  • Dip, don’t soak. Ladyfingers absorb espresso fast — a one-second dip per side is plenty. Soaked ones disintegrate.
  • Chill overnight if you can. Four hours is the minimum; eight makes them transcendent.
  • Pipe for pretty layers. Transfer the cream to a zip-top bag with the corner snipped for clean, even layers.

Variations

  • Alcohol-free: Skip the liqueur entirely — the espresso carries the flavor.
  • Chocolate tiramisu: Fold 1/2 cup melted and cooled dark chocolate into the mascarpone cream.
  • Berry twist: Swap the espresso dip for a raspberry purée and top with fresh berries.
  • Nutella layer: Spread a thin layer of Nutella on the ladyfingers before the cream. Decadent.

Storage

Refrigerator: The cups keep beautifully for up to 3 days, covered, in the fridge — they actually improve on day two.

Freezer: Freeze (without the cocoa dusting) for up to 1 month in airtight containers. Thaw overnight in the fridge and dust with cocoa before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make tiramisu cups without raw eggs?

Yes — this recipe contains no eggs at all. The classic whipped-cream-and-mascarpone method is egg-free by design.

Can I make these alcohol-free?

Absolutely. The coffee liqueur is optional; the strong espresso gives plenty of flavor on its own.

Why are my ladyfingers soggy?

They were dipped too long. One quick second per side is all they need — they’ll continue to soften as the cups chill.

Can I use cream cheese instead of mascarpone?

Technically yes, but the flavor and texture will be tangier and denser. Mascarpone is worth seeking out for authentic tiramisu.

How far ahead can I make them?

Up to 2 days ahead, covered in the fridge. Dust with cocoa just before serving so it stays fresh-looking.
