Candy Corn Sugar Cookies for Halloween

Candy corn is the most divisive Halloween candy in existence — people either hoard it or hand it straight to the nearest child. But candy corn cookies? Universal approval. These tri-color sugar cookie wedges have all the nostalgic charm of the classic candy with none of the waxy controversy: buttery, tender, vanilla-scented, and almost too cute to eat. Almost.

The technique looks impressive but it’s genuinely simple. You make one basic sugar cookie dough, divide it into three portions, tint two of them orange and yellow, press the logs together into a striped bar, and slice it into wedges. The result is a platter of perfect little candy corn triangles that will steal the show at any Halloween party.

Kids love helping — kneading the colors in is basically edible play-dough. Be warned: little hands will look festive for a day or two.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Halloween baking should be fun, not fussy. These deliver on both:

  • Show-stopping looks, simple method. Three colored dough logs pressed together — no decorating skills required.
  • Buttery sugar cookie flavor. Tender, vanilla-scented, with crisp edges and soft centers — a genuinely great cookie underneath the costume.
  • Kid-friendly project. Coloring and shaping the dough is the perfect Halloween activity for little helpers.
  • Make-ahead dough. The tri-color log chills beautifully — slice and bake whenever the party starts.
  • Party-perfect. Hand-held, festive, and sturdy enough for a dessert table or a classroom treat bag.

Ingredients

For the Sugar Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature.
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar.
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional) — adds a lovely bakery-style background note.
  • 2 3/4 cups (345g) all-purpose flour.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder.
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt.

For the Candy Corn Colors

  • Orange gel food coloring — gel gives vibrant color without thinning the dough.
  • Yellow gel food coloring.
  • Coarse sugar, for rolling the edges (optional, but pretty).

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 2 to 3 minutes, until pale, fluffy, and creamy. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using), scraping down the bowl.
  2. Add the dry ingredients. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl. Add to the butter mixture and mix on low speed just until a soft, cohesive dough forms. Don’t overmix — stop as soon as no flour streaks remain.
  3. Divide and color. Divide the dough into three equal portions (a kitchen scale helps — about 225g each). Leave one portion plain white. Knead orange gel coloring into the second portion and yellow into the third, adding a little at a time until you get vivid candy-corn shades. Wear gloves unless you want tie-dyed hands.
  4. Form the tri-color log. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a log about 10 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Press the three logs together side by side — yellow on the bottom, orange in the middle, white on top — pinching gently so they adhere. Roll the combined log lightly to smooth it into one even bar, roughly triangular in cross-section if you can manage it (it doesn’t need to be perfect). Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, until very firm. (Up to 3 days.)
  5. Heat the oven. When ready to bake, position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Slice into wedges. Unwrap the chilled log and slice it crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick rounds with a sharp knife. Cut each round into 6 equal wedges — each wedge should show the three candy corn stripes. If you like, roll the wide (yellow) edge of each wedge in coarse sugar for sparkle.
  7. Bake. Arrange the wedges 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are just set and the bottoms are lightly golden. Do not let the tops brown — pale tops keep the candy corn colors bright and the texture tender.
  8. Cool. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes to firm up, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. They crisp slightly as they cool.

Tips for Success

  • Chill the log thoroughly. A firm log slices cleanly; a soft one squishes and smears the colors. One hour minimum, and if your kitchen is warm, pop the sliced rounds back in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.
  • Use gel coloring. Liquid food coloring adds moisture and gives washed-out pastels. Gel delivers the bold, classic candy corn orange and yellow.
  • Keep slices even. Uniform 1/4-inch slices bake evenly. A ruler is overkill, but try to be consistent — thick slices stay doughy while thin ones overbrown.
  • Don’t overbake. These should look barely done when you pull them — pale on top, just golden underneath. They firm up as they cool.
  • Weigh the dough portions. Equal thirds mean even stripes — a scale takes ten seconds and looks much better.
  • Wear gloves for coloring. Gel dye stains skin for a day or two. Disposable gloves keep the festive look on the cookies, not your hands.

Variations

  • Chocolate-dipped tips: Dip the white tip of each cooled cookie in melted dark chocolate for a “chocolate candy corn” look.
  • Spiced version: Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg to the dry ingredients for a warmly spiced Halloween cookie.
  • Sandwich cookies: Spread orange-tinted buttercream between two wedges for an over-the-top treat.
  • Harvest colors: Swap the palette — try brown, orange, and cream for an autumn-leaf version, or purple, orange, and black for a spookier vibe.
  • Gluten-free: A 1:1 gluten-free flour blend works well here; chill the dough an extra 30 minutes since GF doughs are softer.

Storage and Make-Ahead

Baked cookies keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week — layer them with parchment so the colors don’t transfer. They also freeze beautifully for up to 3 months; thaw at room temperature.

The unbaked tri-color log is a fantastic make-ahead: wrap it tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Slice and bake straight from the fridge (add 1 to 2 minutes if baking from frozen slices). Fresh-baked Halloween cookies with almost no day-of effort — that’s the dream.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these taste like actual candy corn?
No — and that’s the point! They look like candy corn but taste like buttery vanilla-almond sugar cookies. All of the charm, none of the waxy texture that divides candy corn fans from skeptics.

Can I use natural food coloring?
You can, but the colors will be much more muted — think pastel rather than classic candy corn vivid. For the bold Halloween look, gel coloring really is best.

Why did my colors bleed together?
Usually from handling warm dough too much or skipping the chill. Keep the portions separate until you’re ready to assemble, press them together gently (don’t knead), and chill the log until completely firm before slicing.

Can I make these without almond extract?
Absolutely — just use an extra 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla instead. The almond adds a nice bakery flavor, but the cookies are delicious either way.
